Personality: Laughter IS the best medicine. He certainly appreciates humor, whether from him or especially from someone else. In an environment such as the ER (or any medical specialty for that matter), any humorous escape is welcome. Sarcasm is king. Self-deprication is queen. There's enough sadness he must deal with day-to-day. He'd much prefer to smile (and what a dazzling one he has). He's also pretty darn laid-back--the no-tie, button-up shirt with the top button unbuttoned and khakis while wearing sneakers-type.
He's also an excellent listener and understanding. Being in the ER, patients (and even people who work there) always need to talk. He tries giving words of advice that won't make himself cringe and sound cliched, but sometimes he can't think of anything better. He's human--at least he tries.
He also sees a lot of kids (whether as patients or with patients), so he's a great comfort and even distraction for them in trying times. He'll entertain them by doing coin tricks or juggling pieces of safe, nearby medical equipment or just by hugging them, if they're absolutely inconsolable.
History: Not much to report on angst-wise. He was born Oct. 20th, 1970 outside of New York City and grew up there until he was 10, but thanks to his father's job, he, his parents (David and Hilary), and his younger sister Amy moved around quite a bit. Florida, Massachusetts, Washington, before finally stopping back in White Plains, New York.
Jake could have easily gone to a top school (specifically Johns Hopkins), but decided to stay local so he could stay close to his family.
5 years ago, his parents got divorced, but they all saw it coming, so it was easier to immediately get over it--especially with Jake and Amy off taking care of themselves, so no custody or child support battles were necessary. However, whenever it DID stress out his mom or his sister, he'd be there.
Being close to his sister, Amy ended up marrying one of Jake's best buddies from med school, Steve Hannigan. Amy and Steve have been married for almost 6 years with a 4 year-old son Sammy, who Jake calls "Dusty" since as a baby, Sammy would play with the baby powder and get covered in it.
Despite moving a state over to work at PPTH, he still keeps in contact with Amy, Steve, Sammy, and his parents (not his Dad so much since his father is always busy, but no real bitterness there). The biggest reason he decided to not apply for a local hospital was because he knows it's about time he struck out on his own.
Other: Romantically, he's been in a few relationships--even moved in with a woman before while in med school--but they'd all end up just not being a good fit for one another.
He was a one-time astronomy buff, so he may be seen outside on the portica or else on the roof at night unwinding. In fact, he's the owner of a huge, expensive telescope which he keeps on his small deck of his apartment. He can easily point out constellations and even give the history of some of them.
He has prescription reading glasses.
His mother and sister call him "Teddy" (Steve picks on him for that). His father calls him Jacob.
Because he moved around a lot, he has a very slight New York-ish accent. It's detectable only by a discerning ear.
Plays intermediary piano.
